1449674051Don't expect a good time from The Revenant. Scoring the latest movie from Hollywood enfant terrible Alejandro Inarritu is Ryuichi Sakamoto and Alva Noto, with additional music from Bryce Dessner of The National, and it's a bleak affair, but also powerful. Gliding from ambient atmospherics to reflective and emotionally fraught strings, it's a true journey. Peppering the story are mirages of beauty, from a wonderful cello to a masterful ondes martenot, The Revenant makes you feel. That's a good thing. The Revenant will probably need a couple of listens to really sink in, which a lot of the best scores really do. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this plays in the film, some of it is incredibly intense and there's a draw to wanting to see how it's matched visually. If you're in the mood for an antidote to the over-joy of Christmas, the haunting mood of The Revenant will suffice. Happy trails.

The Revenant is released digitally by Milan Records on Christmas Day. A CD release will follow in January with a vinyl release in April.
